Teen Read Week (TRW) is an adolescent reading initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), which is being adopted by school libraries worldwide. It began in 1998 and is celebrated during the months of October–November to encourage teens to spend time reading for pleasure. The main theme for the Teen Read Week initiative is “Read for the Fun of It”, and a sub-theme is adopted each year to serve as the basis for developing programs among school libraries all over the world.

During SY 2021–2022, the English Subject Area launched its Reading Interest Program, a year-long project that promotes the love of reading among AJHS students. The main vehicle for this program is the Online Communication Arts Month (OnCAM), which features various engaging activities for students. Along the same line, part of the mission of the Educational Media Center (EMC) is to promote literary appreciation and provide a conducive learning environment with access to various formats and resources.

The culmination of the activity will be Teen Read Week. The theme for this year is “Oh, the Places You’ll Go! @ Your Library”. Based on the book by Dr. Seuss, the theme reminds everyone that “Today is your day” and “You’re off to great places.” The story teaches that life is a journey filled with highs and lows—some days “you’ll move mountains,” while on others, “you’ll feel stuck waiting for something to happen.” This theme reflects life experiences and encourages everyone to remain hopeful and optimistic.

Dare-to-Wear 2025

GUIDELINES

The guidelines for this year’s Dare-to-Wear are as follows:

  1. Each class should have at least one representative who will dress up as a book character---male, female, a non-binary being, or creature. The class may also choose to have a small group of representatives, as long as the characters are from the same book. The individual can be FICTIONAL or a REAL PERSON.

  2. The entire class is encouraged to help out in the preparation of the costume/s of the representative/s.

  3. The characters should not be violent, scary, obscene, or offensive. Promote characters or people that are positive role models or have a meaningful impact. Likewise, the costumes should be decent and tasteful.

  4. Weapons and props must be harmless. Students may carry them around during the Opening Program. These props may NOT be used or brought out during class time, or lunch time.

  5. Wearing costumes is open to all students, even if they are not officially selected as representatives.

  6. A photowall will be set up in the Library to capture memories and celebrate their creative costumes during the day. Photos may be submitted via the QR code that will be provided. Submissions will earn participation points for the class. Selected photos will be printed and posted on a Library Photo Exhibit Wall.

  7. Representatives may only change into their costumes during the 2nd period, before recess. Students must dress up again in the AJHS dress code after recess.

  8. During Recess time, representatives will line-up by grade level & section at the MST lobby.

  9. Best costumes will earn points for their class’ TRW participation. A banner will be awarded to the class with the highest number of points at the end of the celebration.

PS:  We encourage students to come up with costumes/props that are not expensive, or those that can be improvised / made at home.
