The Library Project

EMC continues to uphold the core values of Ateneo through social involvement programs with other libraries. The Library Project is an initiative that aims to share best practices and extend assistance to libraries through book donations, library linkages, benchmarking, and library personnel training.

Book Drive

Dr. Seuss once said, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” In our school, we are privileged to experience learning with good resources at hand and a great library where we can easily access books and materials to learn and grow more.

The Educational Media Center and the Loyola Reading Club are one in their aim to promote literacy as an integral life skill, as well as advocate the joy of reading beyond the four walls of the classroom. A book drive has been one of the main activities of the Loyola Book Club, now named the Loyola Reading Club. Adopting the EMC tagline, “Read for the fun of it,” the book drive aims to support schools in dire need of reading resources.

In this regard, the EMC and the LRC seek to continue this worthy cause by helping schools build their own libraries through donated books. Likewise, our librarians will assist schools in setting up their libraries and train library personnel on how to maintain them. This project was launched on 21 November 2022 during the Teen Read Week celebration.

This collaboration also endeavors to go beyond donating library materials and training library personnel. It aims to provide other learning needs, such as educational supplies, to its chosen institutions. For this school year, books and other educational materials that will be shared shall be donated to the following three (3) partner institutions:

  • Holy Spirit Elementary School
  • Saint Isidore High School / Father Leoni Memorial School Bukidnon Mission District
  • Child Development Reading Center of Camella West Springville

If we are able to collect more than enough books for the said institutions, the remaining donations will be given to public school libraries in need.

The guidelines for the Book Drive are as follows:

For the Class:

  1. Donate as many books (brand new or pre-loved) as you can. Please ensure that pre-loved books are in good condition (e.g., no missing chapters or pages, no torn or sticky pages, and intact book covers).
  2. Please place all donations in clean, sturdy, and environment-friendly bags or recycled boxes.
  3. Please turn over all donations to the Educational Media Center assigned Drop Center (i.e., Counter 1 of the library).
  4. Dear class officers, kindly make sure to indicate your grade level and section on each bag or box you will be donating, together with a tally sheet of the books and materials donated by your class for checking. Please submit the tally sheet to Ms. Carol Esquilona (EMC) and/or Ms. Tina Alfonso (Dunne Satellite Guidance Office).
  5. Please ensure that all reading materials to be donated are appropriate.

Adopt a Library

In 2020, the EMC initiated a partnership with the Philippine Jesuit Prison Services (PJPS) by donating self-help magazines from the library and books from Forefront Bookstore to support Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) in their academic and reformation journey while serving their prison sentence. The donation has contributed significantly to the development of the ALS-College Library. EMC will continue to collaborate with PJPS through book drives and provide assistance to the best of the librarians’ and the library’s capabilities and resources.

Kapihan sa Aklatan

Another initiative of the EMC is the creation of a venue for the discussion and sharing of best practices among different libraries, including but not limited to the Basic Education and Rizal Libraries. Conducted annually, the event provides a platform for integration and collaboration.

Ang Aklatan Ko’y Kanlungan: Library as Safe Space Campaign

The concept of the library goes beyond mere shelves filled with books; it embodies a refuge, a haven, and a vital part of our cultural and intellectual heritage. Welcome to “Ang Aklatan Ko’y Kanlungan: Library as Safe Space Campaign”, a meaningful initiative dedicated to redefining the library as a sanctuary, a haven of learning, and a vital resource for the community.

This campaign seeks to celebrate the profound role libraries play in our lives and to explore how they serve as essential safe spaces for individuals from all walks of life.

Campaign Objectives

  1. Create a Comfortable Environment for Learning
Develop physical spaces that are conducive to concentration, study, and introspection. Quiet corners, comfortable seating, and well-designed layouts contribute to a calm and welcoming atmosphere.
  2. Facilitate Freedom to Learn
Encourage curiosity and lifelong learning by offering a wide range of resources, from books to digital content, that empower individuals to expand their horizons and acquire new skills.
  3. Promote Critical Thinking
Challenge the community to think critically by presenting diverse viewpoints and offering materials that encourage questioning, reflection, and analysis.
  4. Establish Student-Centered Initiatives
Create safe spaces specifically for children and teenagers. These spaces may include age-appropriate books, educational activities, and support systems that help address challenges such as bullying and social isolation.
  5. Create Digital Safe Spaces
Extend the library’s safe environment beyond physical walls through digital platforms that provide access to information, resources, and opportunities for virtual discussion and engagement.
  6. Promote Inclusivity and Diversity
Strive to accommodate individuals from all walks of life by providing a diverse collection of materials that reflect various cultures, backgrounds, and perspectives, ensuring that everyone can find content that resonates with them.
  7. Support Vulnerable Groups
Provide resources and support for vulnerable populations, such as refugees, LGBTQ+ individuals, and those facing mental health challenges, in ways that respond to their unique needs and realities.
  8. Foster Community Engagement
Serve as a hub for community engagement and social interaction by hosting events, workshops, and discussion groups that bring people together for shared learning and meaningful conversations.

“Ang Aklatan Ko’y Kanlungan” invites everyone to be part of a movement that recognizes libraries not only as repositories of knowledge but also as sanctuaries where diversity is celebrated and learning is empowered.

Together, we explore how libraries can serve as sources of knowledge, guidance, and belonging—helping individuals and communities navigate the challenges of life with confidence, compassion, and hope.
