Information Literacy is considered one of the essential 21st-century skills for students. To be information literate, one must acquire the ability to locate, evaluate, and effectively use information. This school year, topics on Digital Citizenship were added to help students participate fully in their communities, make smart choices online, and ultimately take ownership of their digital lives.
During the full online learning mode (SY 2020–2021 and SY 2021–2022), a two-part program entitled Information Literacy and Digital Citizenship was launched. This program was based on Adaptive Design for Learning principles and could be taken independently, in any order. All Information Literacy Program (ILP) modules were uploaded to Google Classroom created for each class. These modules served as reference guides for students when conducting online research.
Similarly, Digital Citizenship modules were scheduled and implemented during selected Wednesday Class Moderators’ sessions. Since we interact in a digital world, everyone is considered a digital citizen. However, appropriate online behavior is not always clear, especially to students. The Digital Citizenship modules adopted a holistic approach to help students participate fully in their communities, make informed decisions online, and take ownership of their digital lives.
Students who successfully completed the Digital Citizenship modules were awarded a digital badge from the Educational Media Center.
In SY 2022–2023, the Digital Citizenship and Information Literacy Program was renamed the Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Program. Modules were prepared and implemented asynchronously during the First Term as the school adapted the Flex Learning Modality. Similar to the full online setup, MIL modules were posted during scheduled Wellness Wednesdays.
